The COPD Dilemma

n this issue of H&L, we highlight one of the most common yet most overlooked illnesses affecting Filipino adults—Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. Every day in our clinics and hospitals, we meet patients who have lived with chronic cough, breathlessness, and recurring “asthma attacks” for years—without realizing that their lungs have long been struggling to keep up.

Too often, COPD is diagnosed only during a crisis: when a patient arrives in the emergency room gasping for air, when infection overwhelms fragile airways, or when years of smoking, pollution exposure, and untreated symptoms finally take their toll. By then, precious lung function has already been lost.

Yet the message is one of hope, not fear. COPD is preventable, treatable, and manageable—especially when recognized early. With proper medications, pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccinations, clean-air habits, and consistent follow-up, patients can breathe easier, stay active, and live full, meaningful lives.

Let us remember that chronic cough is never “normal.”
Breathlessness is not simply “part of aging.”
And no one should wait for an emergency before seeking help.

As physicians, families, and communities, we can do more to protect the lungs that protect us. Early diagnosis, smoking cessation, clean air, and compassionate care—these are the small steps that make the biggest difference.

Together, we can help every Filipino breathe better and live longer.
