Living Well with Advanced CKD

By the H&L Editorial Team

Advanced CKD brings daily challenges, but quality of life can still be preserved with practical adjustments and the right mindset.

Pace Your Energy

Fatigue is common. Learn to:

–break tasks into small steps

–rest before exhaustion sets in

–prioritize activities that matter most

Eat Smart, Not Less

Dietary restrictions can feel overwhelming. Focus on:

–balanced meals rather than strict deprivation

–working with a renal dietitian

–controlling portions instead of skipping meals

Eating well supports strength, immunity, and mood.

Protect Your Veins and Access

For patients nearing dialysis:

–avoid blood extractions from the planned access arm

–keep fistula sites clean and protected

–report swelling, redness, or pain early

Stay Connected

Isolation worsens physical symptoms.

–talk openly with family

–join support groups

–share concerns with healthcare providers

Plan, Don’t Panic

Understanding treatment options—conservative care, dialysis, or transplantation—reduces fear. Knowledge restores a sense of control.

Key message: CKD changes life—but it doesn’t have to shrink it. Small adjustments can protect independence and dignity.
