The Sandiganbayan’s decision to transfer former Speaker Martin Romualdez to the Quezon City Jail after the independent evaluation of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) physicians is a watershed moment in the intersection of medicine and justice.
I salute Dr. Gerardo “Gap” Legaspi and the UP-PGH team of physicians for their steadfast commitment to truth. Their diagnosis and treatment were not only clinically sound but morally courageous. They acted with agility to ensure patient safety while upholding the principle that justice must never be swayed by power, wealth, or influence.
In a society where malingering and privilege can distort the course of justice, PGH stood firm. They refused to be intimidated, refused to be tricked, and refused to compromise the integrity of medicine. This is the essence of public service: to serve with honor, transparency, and accountability, regardless of who stands before you.
Hospitals are sanctuaries of healing, not havens of privilege. By declaring that Romualdez’s condition no longer required hospitalization, PGH reminded us that medicine is not a shield for the powerful but a refuge for the sick. Their decision dispels the dangerous perception that justice bends for the influential.
