Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the Philippines, claiming 23,448 lives in just the first three months of 2026, according to provisional data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Behind every number is a family, a story, and a system that still struggles to protect its people from preventable suffering.
For more than a decade, the same pattern has persisted — ischaemic heart disease, stroke, cancer, pneumonia, and diabetes dominate our mortality charts. These are not random tragedies; they are reflections of how we live, eat, move, and govern health.
What Must Change
1. PhilHealth Reform:
The current cardiac package must evolve. Chronic coronary artery disease often requires coronary angiogram and emergency CABG, procedures that remain financially catastrophic for most families.
PhilHealth should upgrade case rates to cover these lifesaving interventions fully — not partially.
2. Preventive Health Financing:
We cannot keep funding illness while neglecting prevention.
Raise sin taxes on tobacco, alcohol, vaping products, and sugary drinks.
Use these revenues to build parks, walk lanes, and calorie‑count food labeling systems that make healthy choices accessible.
3. Education as Prevention:
Integrate preventive health education into the school curriculum — teaching children about nutrition, exercise, and emotional well‑being as early as possible.
Reflection
Heart disease is not just a medical condition; it is a mirror of our national priorities.
Every angiogram delayed, every bypass unaffordable, every soda unregulated — these are policy choices.
If we want to save lives, we must shift from treating disease to preventing it.
A nation that protects the heart protects its future.
