Some physicians are remembered for their medical expertise. Others are admired for their leadership. A rare few leave a legacy that transcends hospital corridors and reaches into communities, classrooms, and countless lives.

Dr. Rollin P. Tabuena belongs to that rare breed.

From humble beginnings in Iloilo to becoming one of Western Visayas’ respected pulmonologists, educators, healthcare leaders, and humanitarian advocates, he has devoted his life to a calling larger than himself. Whether caring for patients with complex respiratory diseases, mentoring young healthcare professionals, leading community outreach programs, or promoting wellness and Filipino culture, he has remained guided by a simple but profound mission: to use his gifts in service of others.

His story reminds us that true success is not measured by titles earned or awards received, but by the lives we help heal, inspire, and uplift.

A Childhood Dream That Became a Life’s Mission

Family Foundations: Life before he became a doctor

Born on December 3, 1968, in Concepcion, Iloilo, Dr. Rollin P. Tabuena grew up in a modest household where faith, hard work, and service to others were woven into daily life.

His father, Rogelio Tabuena—a farmer, entrepreneur, and church leader—and his mother, Liny Tabuena, who managed a small sari-sari store, taught him lessons that no classroom could fully provide: perseverance in adversity, humility in success, and compassion toward others.

Long before he wore a white coat, a conversation with his father quietly altered the course of his life.

Rogelio often spoke of a dream he had never been able to fulfill—the dream of becoming a physician.

Young Rollin listened.

What began as admiration for his father gradually evolved into a personal mission. Inspired by that unfinished dream and driven by a desire to serve, he resolved to pursue medicine.

The path was far from easy.

Financial limitations, personal sacrifices, and moments of uncertainty repeatedly tested his resolve. Yet through faith, discipline, and determination, he remained focused on his goal, convinced that education was not merely a means of personal advancement but a tool for serving others.

His dedication led him to complete his primary and secondary education at Central Philippine University, earn a degree in Medical Technology from Southwestern University, and obtain his Doctor of Medicine degree from West Visayas State University.

What began as a son’s tribute to his father ultimately became a lifelong commitment to healing humanity.

Building Expertise, Character, and Purpose

The Pulmonologist at Work

Dr. Tabuena began his medical journey in Internal Medicine training at Iloilo Mission Hospital, where he developed a strong foundation in compassionate patient care.

Recognizing the growing burden of respiratory diseases in the Philippines, he pursued specialization in Pulmonary Medicine at Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Manila.

But his quest for excellence did not stop there.

Awarded a prestigious Monbukagakusho Fellowship, he underwent advanced training at Kyoto University in Japan, where he deepened his understanding of precision medicine and clinical innovation.

Further fellowship opportunities brought him to Italy and Greece under programs supported by the European Respiratory Society, allowing him to gain expertise in respiratory medicine, interventional pulmonology, and smoking cessation programs.

These experiences expanded not only his technical skills but also his understanding of medicine as a deeply human profession.

Despite these achievements, his journey was not without challenges.

Like many physicians, he encountered moments of self-doubt and uncertainty in a highly competitive field. Yet rather than becoming discouraged, he embraced humility, perseverance, and lifelong learning.

Today, he shares those lessons with younger physicians and medical students, emphasizing that clinical excellence must always be accompanied by integrity, empathy, and ethical leadership.

Choosing to Come Home

Mentoring Future Healthcare Leaders

Many physicians who receive advanced international training choose to build careers abroad.

Dr. Tabuena chose a different path.

He came home.

Returning to Iloilo, he committed himself to bringing advanced pulmonary care closer to the people of Western Visayas.

As a pulmonologist, healthcare executive, and laboratory leader, he worked to ensure that patients in the region could access sophisticated respiratory diagnostics and treatments without having to travel long distances to larger metropolitan centers.

Among the innovations he helped strengthen were:

  • Transbronchial Needle Aspiration Biopsy (TBNA) for minimally invasive lung tissue diagnosis
  • TB-LAMP rapid molecular testing for faster tuberculosis detection
  • Advanced interventional pulmonology procedures
  • Airway interventions for emergency respiratory conditions
  • Pulmonary response care during disasters and public health emergencies

These contributions helped expand access to specialized respiratory care for countless patients throughout the region.

Extending Care Beyond the Hospital

For Dr. Tabuena, medicine has never been confined to clinics, laboratories, or hospital wards.

He believes healthcare must reach people where they live.

This conviction has led him to participate regularly in medical missions, free consultations, laboratory screening programs, and public health education campaigns.

His advocacy extends to tuberculosis awareness, asthma education, respiratory disease prevention, and improving access to essential respiratory equipment such as CPAP machines for patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.

Behind every initiative lies a simple philosophy:

Healthcare should be accessible, compassionate, and community-centered.

The Dancing Doctors

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Tabuena and his wife, Dr. Ma. Daisy Pedroso-Tabuena, discovered an unexpected way to inspire healthier living.

They danced.

What began as simple home Zumba sessions eventually grew into a wellness movement that encouraged physical activity, optimism, and emotional resilience during one of the most difficult periods in recent history.

Promoting Wellness Beyond the Hospital. Encouraging healthy lifestyle through community fitness activities.

Their public appearances earned them recognition as Iloilo’s beloved “Dancing Doctors.”

For many people struggling through lockdowns, fear, and uncertainty, they became symbols of hope, positivity, and healthy living.

Ironically, this visibility created an unexpected challenge. Some initially associated Dr. Tabuena more with dancing than with his expertise in pulmonary medicine.

The Dancing Doctors

He never resisted the attention.

Instead, he allowed his work to speak for itself.

Over time, his consistent dedication to patient care, teaching, and professional excellence reinforced his standing as one of Western Visayas’ respected pulmonologists.

Excellence Recognized

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Tabuena has received numerous awards honoring his contributions to medicine, research, innovation, leadership, and humanitarian service.

His work in pulmonary medicine, tuberculosis diagnostics, healthcare innovation, and community advocacy has earned recognition from professional organizations and institutions nationwide.

Yet for those who know him best, the awards are not the story.

They are simply evidence of a life lived in service.

A Legacy Rooted in Faith, Family, and Service

Even amid personal loss, professional challenges, and life’s inevitable setbacks, Dr. Tabuena continues to draw strength from the same foundations that shaped him as a young boy: faith, family, and service.

He hopes to be remembered not merely as a physician, but as someone who inspired others to live with compassion, purpose, and commitment to community.

His story represents far more than professional success.

It is a testament to perseverance over adversity.

To humility amid achievement.

To service above self.

From pioneering respiratory care and mentoring future physicians to promoting wellness, culture, and community engagement, Dr. Rollin P. Tabuena demonstrates how one life, guided by purpose and faith, can leave a lasting imprint across generations.

His legacy cannot be measured solely by awards received, procedures performed, or positions held.

Its true measure lies in the patients who breathe easier because of his care, the students who became physicians under his guidance, the communities strengthened by his service, and the countless lives touched by his compassion.

In an era that often celebrates individual success, Dr. Tabuena reminds us of a more enduring truth:

The greatest achievements are those that help others rise.

Dr. Rollin Tabuena’s Prescription for Life

Work hard. Stay humble. Keep learning. Serve generously. Trust God.

In this conversation with H&L, he reflects on the experiences that defined his journey and the lessons he hopes others can learn from it.

1. What personal values helped you overcome challenges during your medical journey?

The values that sustained me throughout my medical journey were perseverance, humility, discipline, integrity, and faith. Growing up in a modest family in Concepcion, Iloilo, I encountered financial limitations, personal sacrifices, and moments of self-doubt.  However, I learned that challenges are not barriers but opportunities to grow stronger.

I remained committed to continuous learning, hard work, and self-improvement. Rather than focusing on obstacles, I chose to focus on the opportunities before me and on the positive people who believed in my potential. Among them, my wife, Dr. Ma. Daisy Tabuena, has been one of my greatest sources of strength and inspiration. Her unwavering support, encouragement, and partnership have played a significant role in both my personal and professional growth. In addition, my parents instilled in me the values of honesty, humility, respect, and genuine service to others. These principles became the foundation of my career and guided every decision I made as a physician. Equally important was my faith in God, which gave me courage during difficult times, wisdom during moments of uncertainty, and the humility to remain grounded despite

2. How have you contributed to mentoring and guiding future healthcare professionals?

Throughout my career as a pulmonologist and internist, I have been deeply committed to mentoring medical students, postgraduate interns, nurses, residents, and young physicians through clinical training programs, academic lectures, scientific conferences, research activities, and bedside teaching.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my profession is helping trainees bridge the gap between medical knowledge and patient care. I encourage young healthcare workers to see every patient not merely as a case, but as a person deserving dignity, empathy, and respect.

As an educator and mentor, I recognize that teaching extends beyond the classroom and hospital wards. It is about inspiring others through example, fostering a culture of lifelong learning, and helping future healthcare professionals discover their own purpose in medicine.

My greatest fulfillment comes from seeing former trainees grow into skilled physicians, dedicated nurses, and healthcare leaders who continue to make meaningful contributions to their patients, communities, and the medical profession.

3. How did you balance your roles as a physician, community advocate, and cultural supporter?

For me, these roles are not separate responsibilities but interconnected expressions of a single purpose: serving others and creating a positive impact in people’s lives. Whether I am caring for patients as a physician, advocating for community health, supporting cultural preservation, or serving as an active Rotarian, the guiding principle remains the same—Service Above Self.

As a physician, I am privileged to help individuals recover from illness and improve their quality of life. As a community advocate, I work to promote wellness, disease prevention, health education, and equitable access to healthcare. Beyond medicine, I believe that preserving our cultural heritage is equally important in strengthening communities and fostering pride in our identity. This is why I have actively supported the promotion of Hablon weaving and local craftsmanship, helping celebrate the rich traditions and artistry of our Filipino heritage.

Ultimately, I view these roles not as competing demands, but as complementary opportunities to uplift lives, strengthen communities, and contribute to nation-building.

4. What message does your story give to young Filipinos pursuing careers in medicine and public service?

My message to young Filipinos is simple yet powerful: never allow your circumstances to define the limits of your dreams. Where you begin in life does not determine where you can go. What matters most is your determination to persevere, your commitment to lifelong learning, and your willingness to serve others with sincerity and compassion.

Medicine and public service are demanding callings. They require sacrifice, dedication, and a genuine concern for the welfare of others. Yet they are also among the most fulfilling paths onecan choose because they provide countless opportunities to heal, inspire, and transform lives.

I encourage young professionals to remain humble in success, gracious in adversity, and steadfast in their values. Never stop learning, never lose sight of your purpose, and never underestimate the impact of kindness and service.

If my journey teaches anything, it is that with faith in God, perseverance, and a heart dedicated to serving others, even the most ambitious dreams can become realities. More importantly, those dreams can become instruments for creating a better future for our communities and our nation.
