My 3 Non-Negotiables (Even in My Coffee Era)

I’m fully in my coffee era – but at some point, I realized coffee alone wasn’t enough to keep me going. So instead of giving it up, I learned how to balance it.


Body

I’ll be honest – I’m fully in my coffee era.

Coffee is part of my routine, my mood, and sometimes even my personality. I rely on it to start my day, push through work, and get that extra boost when I feel like I’m running low.

But over time, I started noticing something.

No matter how much coffee I drank, I still felt tired – not just physically, but mentally too. There were days I felt wired but exhausted at the same time, like my body was awake but not really functioning at its best.

That’s when it hit me: maybe the problem isn’t coffee itself – maybe it’s how I’ve been relying on it.

And I knew I didn’t want to quit. So instead, I made a few small changes. Nothing drastic – just a few non-negotiables I try to stick to, even on my busiest days.


Hydration Comes First

One of the simplest changes I made was drinking water before coffee.

I used to go straight to caffeine the moment I woke up – no water, no pause, just coffee. It felt normal at the time, but looking back, my body probably wasn’t ready for that kind of start.

Now, I try to drink at least one glass of water before anything else.

It’s a small habit, but I’ve noticed the difference. I feel less jittery, my energy feels more stable, and I don’t experience that sudden crash as often.

It’s not something I do perfectly every day, but when I do, I can really feel how much better my body responds.


Sleep Is Not Optional

If there’s one thing coffee cannot fix, it’s lack of sleep.

I learned this the hard way.

There were days when I thought I could just “catch up” by drinking more coffee. But instead of feeling better, I felt more tired, more anxious, and more off.

Now, I try to protect my sleep as much as I can – being mindful of how late I drink coffee, giving myself time to slow down at night, and not relying on caffeine the next day to make up for lost rest.

It’s not always easy, especially when life gets busy. But I’ve realized that real energy doesn’t come from coffee – it comes from rest.


Listening to My Body

This has been the biggest shift for me.

Before, I would drink coffee whenever I felt like it, without really thinking about what my body actually needed.

Now, I pause.

I ask myself simple questions:
Do I actually need coffee right now?
Or do I just need water?
Am I tired – or just overwhelmed?

More often than not, I realize what I need isn’t another cup – it’s a break, hydration, or just a moment to reset.

Learning to listen to my body has made a bigger difference than any routine or rule I’ve tried to follow.


Still in My Coffee Era – Just More Balanced

I’m still a coffee person. That hasn’t changed.

But now, I approach it differently.

Instead of relying on coffee to fix everything, I see it as something I enjoy – something that fits into a routine that also takes care of my body.

It’s not about being perfect or cutting things out completely.

It’s about creating balance.

For me, that looks like:
coffee, with hydration
coffee, with proper sleep
coffee, with awareness

You don’t have to give things up to take care of yourself – sometimes, you just need better habits around them.


I’m still in my coffee era – just doing it in a way that feels better, and a lot more sustainable.
